Commentary on Shrimad Bhagvad Geeta (Gita) BG: 12.8
Shree Krishna, after emphasizing the superiority of worshipping His personal form, now delves into the process of how to worship Him. He directs Arjun to perform two essential tasks: focus the mind on God and surrender the intellect to Him. The mind generates desires, attractions, and aversions, while the intellect engages in thinking, analyzing, and discriminating.
The state of our mind determines whether we are entangled in Maya or liberated from it. Attachment to worldly matters leads to bondage, whereas detachment leads to liberation. Thus, bondage and liberation are outcomes of the mind’s disposition. Mere physical rituals are insufficient; it’s crucial to immerse the mind in contemplation of God. Without mental engagement, sensory actions lack significance. For instance, even if we hear a lecture, our wandering mind prevents us from comprehending its content. This highlights the importance of mental focus in spiritual practices.
Beyond the mind lies the intellect, which must also be surrendered to God. In worldly matters, when faced with situations beyond our understanding, we seek guidance from someone with superior intellect, such as a doctor or a lawyer. Similarly, surrendering our intellect to God means relying on His guidance in spiritual matters, trusting His wisdom just as we trust a doctor’s diagnosis or a lawyer’s advice in respective fields.
